Survival Kit

In order to be prepared for an earthquake, it’s a good idea to prepare a storage kit that will help you stay safe until you can be rescued. You can use our online checklist to prepare your kit. Alternatively, you can use the checklist feature of QuakeAware Mobile to prepare your kit.Your selections will be saved to your mobile.

Some general notes on survival kits:

  • Store your kit near an exit route
  • Ensure family members know where kit is
  • Keep emergency supplies in easy to carry kit (a pack or shoulder bag)
  • Ensure extra medication is available
  • Rotate your food supply to ensure it is fresh. Pick non-perishable items and always check the items in your kit for expiry dates.
  • Select high energy foods such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, trail mix, etc; Avoid foods that will increase thirst. (Chips, Pretzels, etc
  • Change water every six months to a year as packaging can leech into the water and the water can become stale.
  • Batteries have a shelf life. Check the packaging on the batteries to see how long before they need to be changed. Note that rechargeable batteries are not recommended for your kit because they lose their charge quickly.
